“Oh, boy – do I really have to talk about us? Do I really have to engage with a two-legged human type creature? Oh, boy! Well, OK. I’m not as brave as I’d like to be, but I’m a tough, strong young man, and I can do this. I can do it!”
“I am Mitchell. I’m a guy, and I’m less than a year old. I’ve got tabby in my face and on my back. Behind me and well-protected by me is my little sister, Hamline. She is sweet and kind and a total dear heart, but she is quite overwhelmed. She is grey and white and quite winsome.”
“See, we were born outside, and our mom raised us all by herself under porches and in protected corners. She did it! Mom is little, very little, but she’s strong and tough. She told us, “Most people are OK, but, children, you must be careful because some two-legged creatures are not OK. So, look before you leap. Learn before you trust.”
“Here we are. We are looking, not leaping. Learning, not yet trusting, but thinking that it might be possible. Yes, you may pet us; we’re starting to like it. This is just so strange. We’re indoors – certainly drier and warmer than out there. This is good. Food shows up reliably around here. This is very good. All the people we’ve met are nice. Some even tell us we’re cute – which we probably are.”
“But – oh, my, oh, boy! Cats! All kinds of cats! A couple of shaggy fellows who live in the cupboard! A black woman who sits on a shelf and sings like Janis Joplin! Oh, boy – never saw the likes of these under that porch. We’re just soft, good-hearted young siblings, secretly still kittens, looking for a chance to have a belated childhood with toys and good food and real people friends – oh, boy, that would be wonderful.”
“Come sit with us. Talk nicely to us; we’ll talk nicely back. Well, I will. Hamline just looks and thinks, thinks and looks. Please be patient with us; we will come out of our shells. We are cats, not turtles. For $230, we’ll come home with you. We’ll look, we’ll learn, we’ll love. We’ll give you the happiness of seeing us become the little kitty butterflies that we furry caterpillars know we are.”
