“I’ll be honest. I am Emmett. I am a fine black cat. I am looking for a very special person – probably just one – maybe two – who is patient, indulgent, and willing to spoil me rotten. How’s that for being up front and personal?”
Here’s the story. I was a very young, very determined fellow, only about four weeks old. I heard someone talking about Emmett Kelly, the famous tramp clown. “That’s who I want to grow up to be!” I said. So I named myself Emmett, and I headed off down a railroad track – because I figured that I needed to be a tramp before I could be a tramp clown. Right?
Some human came along and said, “Oh, you poor little kitten – what are you doing out here all alone, tramping down the tracks? I shall rescue you.”
“No, No,” I said, “I am off to tramp the world, become a clown, and join the circus.” Presto, I was rushed off to a “foster home”, where I have to admit the food was excellent, the human was kind, and the chairs were soft. But what about my kitten fantasies? I thought about my clown ambitions – but, gee, the sofa was comfy.
So I had a good thing going for a couple of years. Then the kind human couldn’t spoil me rotten anymore, and I came here – to The Shelter. My talents and ambitions are not recognized. There are other cats here. I don’t mind most of them, but, sometimes, when I think about the future I’d planned, I get sad. And then I get rather angry.
So, are you patient, indulgent, and willing to let me blossom and explore my fantasies? Can you promise to let me watch clown shows and train movies? Can you promise to never, ever, say, “Emmett, you’ve got to give that stuff up and get yourself a job selling insurance?” I don’t want to sell insurance – or socks, for that matter. I just want to see myself as Emmett Kelly, with a sad face and a long story. If you’ll let me do that – and bring $120 to this Shelter place, we’ll have a good, long, interesting life together. Honest.”
PS: I currently reside at THE ADOPTION CENTER (not in foster care). If you can't stop in but would like to know more about me, please call 651-642-5900, ext.3. Thanks!
