“Wouldn’t you just know?! Sooner or later, some human around here was going to name a cat Mittens! Universal Cat Name: Mittens. Children’s stories – the dogs are all Spot, and the cats and kittens are all Mittens. I hear tell there’s a cat here – black-and-white like me – named Spot! But I am Mittens – really I am – and I am not a dog. Are you now totally confused? Oh, good – then I can cozy up and ask you to adopt me. Hee!”

“’ Three little kittens they lost their mittens, And they began to cry, Oh, mother dear, we sadly fear Our mittens we have lost.
What! lost your mittens, you naughty kittens! Then you shall have no pie. Mee-ow, mee-ow, mee-ow.
No, you shall have no pie.’

Sure enough, there are three of us kittens. ! I have a sister, Checkers, and a brother, Pedro, and a Mom. We came here together. We are all black and white, and we may have lost our mittens! Oh, mother dear!”

“I can tell you that I just wrapped our foster people right around my little white toes. I said, ‘Tell everyone that Mittens is sweet and serene. They did. I said, ‘Tell them that I am an elegant young lady.’ And they did. I said, ‘Don’t tell people that I do circus tricks, that I hang upside down on the furniture.’ They didn’t tell you about that, did they? Ah, but Mittens is an honest woman, so, in full disclosure, yes I do hang upside down on furniture, and I intend to go to trapeze school in the spring!”

“I just love people, especially people who play silly cat games with me. I even like small people – the not full-grown kind. I think they’re called children, right? Not kittens? And they never lose their mittens? Oh, they do? As long as they can play with me – and know enough to know which is the toy and which is the cat – they are my kind of people. I might even share my pie with them!”

“How about it? A Cat named Mittens? It’s a Good Cat Name. I’m sweet and serene and elegant – and I do circus tricks! $120 is all it takes. How about my fluffy sister Checkers, too? Permanent and pretty entertainment from both of us - $230 . We’ll do our best to not lose our mittens!”
