Nougat: a confection made with sugar and honey and usually coated or blended with roasted nuts. That would be me. See the pure white bib and paws? My rather furry sugar and honey. See the tabby stripes? My very best imitation of roasted nuts – some dark, some tan – all done to show you that I am a special cat. A $20 truffle if you please, not just some ordinary mass market sweet!

 

I must tell you, too that the consistency of nougat can range from chewy to hard. I read that on Wikipedia, and it suits me. When I am feeling all lovey and purry, I would be “chewy”. And when I am fed up with all the uproar and to-do around here, I can be “hard”. I am proud and smart and dignified. I am 102% Cat, not a trace of fawning dog genes in this girl. I can snuggle and purr with the best – but only if you deserve it. Someone quite unceremoniously left me here; such people do not deserve me. So I say.

 

How about that? I belong on the steering committee of an important charity ball or, perhaps, on the board of the opera auxiliary. I belong with people as fine as I. Why am I asserting all this? Stop and listen, fine people. There’s a cat upstairs, looks rather like a guinea pig, and he is belting out arias as though he thinks he’s Pavarotti – and he hasn’t hit a single note square on the head. Not one.

 

I, Nougat, am made with sugar and honey, and I deserve to be with my fine people, not stuck in steerage with all this clatter and yowing and meowing. These cats – that would be cat with a small c, unlike me – a Cat. These cats – heavens! As I’ve heard people say, “I’m a celebrity – get me out of here!”

 

How about a smooth and gentle waltz, Strauss perhaps, to waltz me away from here into your home, into your lap, next to you where I will purr with dignity and pride and extend all my love to you who deserve it? Ah, I am more than a $20 truffle; I am a $100 Cat! Please bring the $100 with you; $20 for my exquisite confection; $80 for my affection and my Catness. Shall we? I think we shall.
