“Hey, there, people! You wouldn’t happen to have some cat toys, would you? See, I’m a young single fellow, just finishing up my Ph.D., and it’s been hard work, and I’m ready to play. For a while, anyway.”
You’ll be able to tell by my wise, alert face that I’m unreasonably smart. When I’m not playing – which I’d like to do – I study this room and note the complex relationships among many indefinite variables – including me – and including you. Finishing up my dissertation on complex systems theory, with a minor in nuclear physics. Don’t let that word nuclear bother you. I don’t do things that explode and radiate. Ever. Never.
Aside from my charming personality, the only thing about me that radiates is my fur. Look at me under this natural light. “Yes, a buff to orange rather tabby fellow – pink nose – nice smile.” OK, now let’s stroll over here under these fluorescents. “Look at that! A brownish, grayish fellow – still rather tabby, though, and still with a pink nose and nice smile.” It’s true – Sam, ordinary old Sam (so you thought), is a gazing ball, a chameleon, a fascinating study in art – perhaps even a holograph. “Wooo! Meee!”
“C’mon, folks, bring Sam a toy! Watch this! I shall now demonstrate my ability to reach through the holes on this chair and grab that toy! A – ya! Got any more toys for me?” See, as smart as I am, I’m not that far past my days as a kitten, and I like to revisit them every now and then. But you know what I’d like most, beyond toys and reveries of youth? Guess! My very own people in my very own house! A lap to sit in, I think, and a few windows to gaze through. How about making me an offer? I am likely to accept.
One other thing to notice, please: I carry my tail like a puma. Long, willowy, with a bit of a wave down and dip up. It says dignity and strength as well as “work of art” – which I am. This tail, too, is just about puma color, so, if you want, I’ll sit in the window with it all hanging down and draped around and worry up the mail carrier and UPS. Of course, I’d giggle – and so will you. So come on over – with cat toys for me and $100 for these good people so they can help out other good cats. I’ll be working on my dissertation until you arrive. I am Sam. Sam I am. Meee!
PS: I currently reside at THE ADOPTION CENTER (not in foster care). If you can't stop in but would like to know more about me, please call 651-642-5900, ext.3. Thanks!
