“Do excuse me while I stretch…..sttrretchhh….ah, now, pleased to meet you. I am Shadow. I am a black cat, a very black cat. Perhaps I am real. Perhaps I am just a Shadow, following my sister Sprite. I am bigger than she. Shadows are often bigger than the object from which they come. Am I real? Am I a Shadow? Perhaps, simply, I am both. 

Sprite and I are ballet dancers. We once danced with the Bolshoi. Really. Notice our fine well-balanced walks, also our upright sable tails. We are sleek and lean. We are elegant. I speak very softly. Ladies do not holler. There are some cats around here who are not ladies. I am not one of them. I call myself an aristocat. Perhaps I am a Russian aristocat – that would explain the Bolshoi, wouldn’t it? 

I am called Shadow because I am dark and move in perfect harmony. I am called Shadow because I will follow you and play with you and purr with you. I purr seriously and deliberately, not just as idle foolishness.  Like Sprite, I am very cheerful about people who enjoy my fine qualities and my sleek black self. You may hold me and feel how soft I am. You will then feel my noble purr even as you hear it. 

I am a black cat – a very elegant very black cat. I am Shadow, and I like myself. I am Shadow – and I like you! Could we be friends? I am friends with Sprite, my sister, and I’d be happy to be friends with you – and even happier, I think, if you wanted to be friends with both of us. But I am flexible – proud, elegant, aristocatic - but flexible.  How about you bring me a toy or two – or three? I’ll play with you. How about you bring me $100 so I can pay my hotel bill? How about another $100 and pay Sprite’s bill, too? Then we all go home and play – and I will sttrrettchhh – and you will have a good day because you will know that I am real. I really am.
