We Like People. We Like Ourselves.

“Arroww! Ayahh! I am Belafonte. I am young and sleek and very black. I sing. I orate. I preach. Is the pastor at your church a bit boring? Hire me – I’m lots of things, but I’m not boring. The dignified, reserved, well-posed fellow with the long black hair and some interloping white, too – he’s my brother Harry. We made a deal: I make noise; he makes handsome. We named ourselves Harry and William – but some princes said, ‘Hey, cats! We are Harry and William – you go be somebody else.’ Do I talk a lot? You bet! Awaahh!”

“Awaah? We like people. We like food. We like ourselves. We like each other. Harry will love on you. See? He wants to nuzzle you. Go ahead – pet his fluffy guy head. You may pet my head, too, when I stop moving – which I don’t do very often. Arooh!”

Harry says, “Don’t be overwhelmed by my brother. He’s a good fellow. He just likes the sound of his own voice. He’ll also tell you, long before you ask, that we have some oriental shorthair ancestors somewhere. Where do you think he got that voice? And he’s so sleek, his fur so short that it looks as if it’s painted on him. Hey! It’s a cat suit! On a cat! I may be the quiet one, but I can do silly just fine.”

“Nuh, nuh! Don’t even think about bananas! Don’t even think about singing about bananas! We know: ‘Day-o, day-ay-ay-o, Daylight come and he wan' go home, Day, he say day, he say day, he say day, he say day, he say day-ay-ay-o, Daylight come and he wan' go home.’ We know Harry Belafonte sang it. We are Harry and Belafonte. That’s different. True, Belafonte sings a lot – but not about bananas and tarantulas. Nuh! Nuh!”

There’s one bit of truth in there, though. We do “wan' go home.” You have home for two charming fellows? You have no bananas? No tarantulas? Cool. $230 takes both of us home with you! Arraahh! We “wan' go home.” Now! Meow! Araah!
