“Just pet my little grey and white head, and tell me, ‘Little girl, it’s going to be OK.’ Tell me again. Pet me again. Talk softly, talk kindly, tell me just once more, ‘It’s going to be OK.’ I’m a good-hearted cat. I’m so good-hearted that my friends – my feline friends – say I have two hearts, maybe three. I think they’re right because I’ve got at least one heart that’s broken. I had people, see, but not any more.”

“Just pretend you’re a bartender, a therapist, a hair stylist, and let me cry a bit. I’m sad. I’m scared. Is it safe here? I see other cats. Am I safe?”

“Yes, dear Hearts, you are safe. The cats you see are feline friends. All the people here are people friends. You will have food, water, soft blankies, toys, all your many Hearts’ desires – except no sauteed house sparrow with béarnaise sauce. You may have hugs and smiles, too – all you want.”

“There! I heard you laugh about the sparrow, didn’t you? You’re going to be just fine, little girl. Here, I’ll scratch your chin, admire your pink and black nose. We’re going to find you a new home, a forever home, people who will love you so much – but, no, they won’t saute sparrows for you, either.”

“I hear people laughing. They are in that little box!”

“No, that’s a radio.”

“Why is that guy, that human, singing about Lutherans? What’s a Lutheran? Am I a Lutheran?”

“That’s just Garrison Keillor – he’s sort of famous around here. He sings to sad, scared cat girls. He makes people laugh, maybe cat girls, too.”

“Would a Lutheran bring me sauteed sparrow?”

“I doubt it. If she’s Norwegian, she might bring you lutefisk, though.”

“Oooh, fish! I like fish! Would you pet my little grey and white head again? I am starting to feel safe. If you have $120 with you, you could take me home, be my forever person? Would you? Could you? I am a sweet, soft girl with a big, big heart – at least one - to love you. I think I’ll purr a little!”

If you'd like to know more about me, just stop in at the Adoption Center to meet me or leave a message for my secretary at 651-642-5900 ext. 3. She'll call you back.
