“Cardboard boxes, cardboard boxes, oh, how I love cardboard boxes! C’mon now, sing with me….boxes, boxes, big ones, little ones, boxes, preferably not on the hillside….”

“Hello, I’m Tinney, so I’m told, and, indeed, I love boxes – especially this box – a cardboard box – that I right now am in. Why? Because I like being in the box, hiding in it, sleeping in it, purring in it, and staring out of it straight to you. A fine black cat such as I can do many creative things with a box. I apologize – I don’t have another box for you. Perhaps if you ask the nice woman over there? I know she’s nice because she brings me food. Maybe she can bring you a box!”

“Let me tell you about all the wonders of being a fine black cat, too. I think I’m about four years old. I’m very soft and very shiny. I have big yellow eyes, really big, that glow like two trains coming through the tunnel – especially when I’m in my tunnel – my box! I’m quiet and gentle, and I’d think it quite wonderful if you would pet me. I’m staying in my box, but please do pet me.”

“See, I lived outside all last winter, and I don’t have my front claws. Imagine that – some human must have removed my claws – and then left me outdoors to take on monsters without them! Monsters, oh, yes. So I want to be very sure that no monsters are sneaking up on me before I venture out of this excellent box.”

“It’s not easy to be a black cat. No, I don’t mean like that frog – ‘not easy being green’ – I mean a cat has to work at it. Blackness is a recessive gene, so both mom and dad have to carry it or – you’re not going to be black. Tabby, calico, orange fluff – but not black.  Still, in the old English county of Yorkshire, sailors’ wives kept black cats to assure that their husbands would return from the sea. We are good luck. If your spouse sails, you might want to adopt me.

“Adopt me! What a great idea! Only $120 to the nice woman who brought you your own box, and I’ll bring my box and go home with you. I think cardboard is good luck, too!
